Well, there is a movie theatre, it's called "Calexico 10." It has 10 screens, as you may have guessed, the quality is probably the best that we have in the Valley, but for how long? Who knows?

As far as a theatre theatre, there's always been good ol' Rodney Auditorium.

I'd like to know what you exactly did to get the skate park into Calexico? Did you cry to mommy and daddy?

Just kidding.

If you really had a part in the creation of this recreational park, then I commend you and appreciate that we have people who are willing to contribute to society on Calecia.com.

me a some buddys where out in a citycouncil meet and they ask for any opinions or changes or new things you would like to see in the city, i got up and ask for a skate park. then they made me and some friends go to a private meet in the community center. they also ask us to find out how much it was going to cost i took them blueprints of some parks and how we would like the skate park to look, our plans where alot better then the one they got. couple of months later we havd the skate park

Dang. Things sure have changed.

Back in the early 1990s, all my skate buddies from Calexico and I, along with a few non-skateboarding friends and some parents, went to the Calexico City Council to ask for a skate park and they pretty much blew us off. They said they'd look into it, but, this being Calexico, they were merely blowing sunshine.

It all has to do with insurance, really, both then and now, so I don't blame them (that much.)

The reason Calexico finally got a skate park is because, a few years ago, skateboarding was officially classified by the State as a "hazardous recreational activity," thus exempting skate park owners of liability if someone were to get hurt at their park -- that wasn't the case back then.

That alone wouldn't have made a difference. The thing that made the park a reality is like the Rev said: clearing the city of any liability.

look skateboarding has been hazardous ever since people started skateing, they would :banned: skaters from every place they skated. so it was not a few years back like the rev said, its been a extreme sport all this time and every extreme sport is consider hazardous no matter what it is thats why they are call extreme sports

it actually became an "extreme" sport in '98 or '99 when espn classified it as extreme for the x-games. before that, it was just called a sport. so no, it hasn't been an extreme sport all this time because the concept wasn't around until espn got their hands on it.

Of course skateboarding has always been hazardous, but it was officially categorized as such in the legal code a few years ago, thus making the skater, and not the property owner, liable for any injuries they might sustain. That is the only reason why skate parks have been springing up all over California in the past few years.

Why do you think the Pipe Line, and most all the other classic skate parks across California, closed down during the mid-1990s? Lawsuits.

By the way, the term "Extreme Sport" was coined by advertising suits who thought they could sell a few more soft drinks or sneakers by giving these sports and activities an edgier, youth-oriented name. Hyperbole equals bullshit.
