In the past, there has been a lot of talk about Wal-Mart, their business tactics and how they presumably destroy local economies. There is a Wal-Mart in Calexico and there are two other Wal-Marts within a 20 mile radius of this location.
There are set plans to build a new Wal-Mart, a Super Wal-Mart, to replace the existing store located just north of Calexico. It was voted on by the citizens of Calexico to overturn the City Council's ordinace to restrict the world's largest corporation from constructing this new "super store," which will provide groceries and more along with it's existing stockpiled merchandise. The people of Calexico wanted it over a year ago, but do they still want it now?
What has the city's management and it's people allowed to happen to this city? It appears that just about every year there is another large commercial building that is evacuated and practically left unoccupied with no other businesses interested in leasing them. Calexico is quickly becoming a commercial ghost town while it's consumers look for less expensive and more inferior products and services. |

To Wal-Mart's credit, they will not be leaving a vacant building when they move into the new Super Wal-Mart. The plan is to demolish the current Wal-Mart building and convert it to parking space. |

I skimmed an article on the IVP last week and it mentioned they were planning to build a new building north of the existing one. So when I read this, I wondered what exactly was going to happen to the existing building?
It would make a lot more sense to just expand to the old Sam's Club building and demolish the northern part of this building. Parking could simply be to the north.
Although the article stated a dispute about a traffic intersection that would be located at on Jasmin Rd. and Highway 111, which of course WMT does not want to pay for, but will. From my recollection, this is way past Toys R Us. I sure hope I'm wrong, because if I'm not... Calexico just got "Punk'd." |

L.A. to tell Wal-Mart to fuck off:
L.A. ready to say no to Wal-Mart, may ban opening of 'supercenters'
"They're a Goliath, but we're a Goliath, too, and we want to send them a message," said Eric Garcetti, the councilman proposing the restrictions, which appear to have strong council support. "We don't believe their business model is good for the kind of economic development that we want in the places where we need it most. And we want people to realize that the 10 cents they may save on a jar of pickles could mean paying another $5 in taxes for all the extra visits to local emergency rooms."
This is exactly what every citizen in every city should consider. |

Yeah, but those places can do that. In areas like those variety is preferred to saving money, pretty much because people have the money to afford variety.
In the Valley, you've got to save money every way you can. 10 cents on a jar of pickles is enough. Especially when you take into consideration that the majority of people in the Valley consider 10 bucks an hour "good pay."
It's a sad scenario, what's sadder is that it's the truth. |
