I really hate Valentine's Day cause to me it's just another day in which you spend a shit load of money on dumb shit girls like, and companies such as flower shop's take advantage and raise the prices. What are your thoughts on this day and what are you doing with your SO ?

Here's a good suggestion from the master of frugality, Clark Howard:

Where to buy flowers on Valentines Day
http://clarkhoward.com/shownotes/2004/01/28.html

Valentines Day is approaching, and buying roses for your sweetheart is traditional. Some people see V-Day as a Hallmark holiday that exists solely to boost the pocketbooks of retailers. The cost of roses skyrockets on Valentine’s Day – even at places like Costco Wholesale where prices are normally very cheap. Costco roses are usually $12.95 for two dozen. On Valentines Day, it’s about $25 for a dozen. So, why not give roses on days other than Valentines Day and give something different that day. It’s a thought. But if you’re set on giving roses to your loved one, many nurseries offer good deals on roses that you pick yourself. Supermarkets also have great deals on roses. Non-flower stores typically charge $20 to $30 a dozen. Buying from florists costs a lot more! They range in price from about $35 to more than $100. Clark has never understood the idea of having a stranger coming to the office to deliver you flowers. Wouldn’t it be nicer if your loved one delivers them himself or herself. It’s half the money and you get a visit! But do something for your sweetheart.

Valentine's Day is what you make of it. You can use it as an excuse for a little extra romance or an excuse to get together with your friends to bash romance and have a few drinks. And I don't think it's about "dumb shit girls like". Girls get guys stuff too. It doesn't have to be so serious. You can get stupid gag kitschy gifts or IF YOU WANT, something pricier with more meaning. The possibilities for Valentine's are endless. You can make fun of it or revel in it. If you only look at the commercial side of it, you won't be able to enjoy it. Girls that demand expensive gifts and often insincere demonstrations of love from their weak minded men on Valentine's Day, ruin it for everyone else. Cause then we have to hear those men whine about how much Valentine's Day sucks. EVERY year.

V-Day. Not the hugest fan of this day, but if done right it could be ok. My classic was cooking for her. Every damn restaurant is booked and waiting in lines can be a drag. So stay home and just chill. Cook, buy some wine, and fix the table. As for roses, not a huge fan, so I get flowers. Exotic the better. As for gifts keep them simple. Buying two or three smaller gifts then one large one can be more beneficiary.

I've heard at least a couple females talk about how their SOs think they are really lucking out this Valentine's Day because of it landing on a Saturday. One of them straight out said that they were going to make sure that they still received a pricey dozen of roses, regardless of it being a non-workday.

I may be wrong, but many women see this as a day to compete with others of the same gender in an effort to get the most elaborate and expensive arrangement of flowers/chocolates/candies/etc. You can see it in their eyes when the delivery person walks into the office and they act surprised as if they weren't even expecting it. Many even pass it off as if it wasn't a big deal that their SO just spent over $100 on a gift that was going to wither away in a matter of days.

I agree with Clark's suggestions. Gift and/or thoughts are most meaningful when they occur on a more frequent basis. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that I live by them.

I agree with Elchrist, it's all about competition with women. Same reason why women go out all dressed up, it's not for the men, It's just to look better and catch more attention than other women. Last year every lady in the office (12) received a flower arrangement except for one. She was totally sad and to the point of crying by the time it was 4pm. Out of the 4 guys in the office, none of us got shit. Big fucken deal, we don't give a damn about this day, it's all about pleasing the ladies. This day clearly show's how far we'll go for the punani.

Generalizations like that are just so annoying. For the women I know, Valentine's Day has nothing to do with what other women get or don't get from the men in their lives. Rolling Eyes Even more ridiculous is the theory that women only get dressed up to outshine other women. Huh? I think both men and women getting dressed up is about feeling good about ourselves and maybe reminding our significant others how good we look. Not making other people jealous. I swear I don't think I've read one single positive generalization about women on this entire site. Could someone please show me one.
