Local Calexico News Veterans need help I moved here in March after my wife completed her obligation to the United States Army. I myself am a veteran also and met my wife while we were both serving. Before we left to come here from Fort Eustis (her duty station), I applied for a position with the Border Patrol. I am in the latter stages of the applicant process with the Border Patrol, but I have no idea how long it may take until I actually get that call that I am hired. In the meantime I have applied to so many jobs I have lost count. In all cases, I have not been selected, and in most I received no notification of my application status. While I do not have a bachelor?s degree, I am two classes away from my associate?s degree. I served two tours in Iraq as well as a tour each in Bosnia and Kosovo. It seems to me like the Imperial Valley looks at veterans with a very ?who cares? attitude. Is there anywhere in the Valley that looks at veterans as an asset? People that are disciplined and easily trainable? Veterans have to operate in the harshest of environments with huge expectations. As a former sergeant I was viewed as a professional who could be counted on to ensure tasks were completed, all the while making the people around me better. I understand that jobs are hard to come by in our current situation, but is it too much ask to give a veteran a chance after all we have given? I?m not on the offramp of Interstate 8 begging for a hamburger yet, but I may be getting close. What?s the deal? — Bewildered in Calexico > Read > Discuss Passengers at risk?I just witnessed something that I cannot believe is happening in California. I saw many women and children getting off of the Numero Uno Shuttle, which comes from Calexico, and they were drenched in sweat! I asked one of them why, and they said the bus does not have air conditioning and that they have all complained and that the answer they get is that they do not have to ride if they don?t want to. This is not an option for many of them because that is how they support their families. It is absolutely inhumane and a health risk! These people pay for a service and to not have air conditioning in a bus that is often full to capacity with mostly women and children in 100-degree weather and up is downright criminal. — Disgusted, Imperial County > Read > Discuss Why no fireworks in Calexico for Fourth?I?ve got a question. I know that there are laws protecting all of us during the Fourth of July, and that illegal fire crackers get confiscated at the border during this time so that houses don?t go up in smoke and fingers don?t get blown off, but I live in Calexico and witnessed what I consider one of the best fireworks display that Calexico has ever put on during the Mariachi Festival (props for Calexico). Why is it that the city doesn?t put as much effort in getting a professional fireworks show to display their patriotism during our beloved Independence Day as they did during this non-American holiday? I believe that if Calexico went through all the red tape, jumped through all the hoops and put up with all the hassles in getting this festival together, they should go through the same for the celebration of this great country?s (even in all its flaws) Independence Day. — Patriotic Calexican > Read > Discuss I.V. Mall needs Wi-FiI wonder why the Imperial Valley Mall has no public Wi-Fi? I go have lunch there very often and would like to have some free Wi-Fi while on my lunch break. It?s not an expensive project. It would only take about eight to 10 access points and an Internet connection to set it up. I could help with planning if necessary. Maybe get Time Warner to sponsor the Internet access? It could be good marketing for them. Most malls in San Diego and Yuma have free public Wi-Fi, why can?t ours? — gee4mac, Calexico,/b> > Read > Discuss Border Patrol agent arrestedA U.S. Border Patrol agent based out of the Indio sector faces charges of kidnapping with the intent to commit sexual assault and other charges following his arrest last week by Riverside County Sheriff's investigators.
